The question this page answers
Week by week through the plan year, what did the book hold, sell and take in, how much cover is left, and which week can I still change?
What you see
The ledger is the Weekly view of the Merchandise plan: the page is headed Merchandise plan, and Monthly and Weekly switch between it and the buy plan. It reads one buy plan by its 4-5-4 weeks: the plan for today is the ongoing year, else the nearest year ahead, else the most recent year past, and a control in the head changes it. A second control cuts the grid to a category, a commitment or a channel.
The figure row carries the week: Weeks, the window; This week, a door to the cash gate at the same week; and Earliest change, the first week that has not settled, with the lever its zone allows as the word beside it, chase only or a normal order, and a door to the buy plan's phasing at the month that holds it. Where every week has traded it reads None left.
Four tabs sit under the head: Weekly position, Monthly plan, Margin & markdowns, and Comparisons.
Weekly position opens with one chart, Cover: the cover the book held each week against the declared target, the last counted week as the seam. Under it, This week and First changeable jump to those columns, and the ledger itself is one table with the lines down and the weeks across, a band over each run of weeks: Actual, Trading now, Chase only, Open. The lines, each with the basis it is counted in and how the Window column rolls it up:
| Line | Basis | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Opening stock | cost | first week |
| Gross sales | retail | sum |
| Returns | retail | sum |
| Net sales | retail | sum |
| Last year, the same week | retail | sum |
| Markdown and promo | retail | sum |
| Intake placed with a supplier | cost | sum |
| of which already received | cost | sum |
| Closing stock | cost | last week |
| Cover, at the recent rate | weeks | last week |
| Cover, at this week's rate | weeks | last week |
| Short of cover | units | last week |
A level is never summed. Each line's provenance rides its name on hover. A cell nobody measured says which absence, never a dash or a zero. On a channel cut only the sales lines are drawn, and the page says cover is not split by channel.
Monthly plan draws the envelope as a ladder: Ceiling, with the buying reserve as its word; Placed, with what is received and what is on order; Open to buy, with what is drafted, which reads Over the ceiling once the ceiling is passed. Beneath it are the published merchandise plan and the commitment forecast at cost, by month. Open to buy says how this figure differs from the plan's and the room's.
Margin & markdowns sets markdown and margin against the plan by month, with the categories under the intake margin listed. Comparisons, headed Sales comparisons, sets these weeks' net sales against the same traded weeks last year, against the plan over whole months, and against a forecast.
What to do
The ledger places no order and edits no commitment. The zone decides the lever, never the gap: a settled week is history; a week inside the lead time is chase only; a week beyond it takes a normal order, staged on the Bench.
Company financial defaults, in the head, opens the Declare drawer for the five terms this page runs on: return rate, markdown rate, intake margin, lead time and cover target. Only an admin can change them.
While the book is over its cover, a card names the ways back, cheapest first, and performs none of them. Its head counts the units over and the week they are read at; its rows are Move, Worth, at cost, and Undo. Cancel what is still in draft costs nothing to undo; pushing intake to a later week needs the supplier to agree; markdown cannot be undone, which is why it is the last resort.
Every week on the cash gate is a door back to this page at the same week.
