## The question this page answers

What can each month of this fiscal year still spend on stock once what has been spent, what is on order and what replenishment is asking for are counted, and where did the year's buying money go?

## What you see

The Budget is the whole of Finance on Lite, Essentials and Essentials+: the fiscal year the merchant typed as a grid of months, and the open to buy arithmetic that [Smart Replenishment](../replenishment/smart-replenishment), [the Bench](../replenishment/the-bench) and [Home](../home/home)'s money rungs read. It is the Budget row under Plan on those rails; the Pro rail has none. The basis line reads cost, the currency and the month; the head prints no as-of.

The head's controls: Revenue target, typed in place, Not set until it is, saved on Enter or on leaving the field, Escape cancels; Year starts, the twelve months, which realigns the saved months onto the new year and reruns the post-sync calculations; Quick fill, for a writing seat, a menu of drafts, Spread evenly across the year, Follow the suggested buy, Match last year's spend, Clear every month, each offered only when its source is there; and a menu of doors, Smart Replenishment and [Purchase orders](../supply/purchase-orders).

Two figures can stand in the head: Against unplanned months, money spoken for in months nobody planned, and Revenue to date with its share of the target under it, or no target set. Beneath them the year's position: Stock budget, Spent, On order, Suggested purchases and After suggested purchases. Includes unsaved budget changes. stands while a month is edited. Then how many months are over budget and unplanned, with Review purchase orders and Review suggested purchases.

The page is three sections, one shown at a time, named on a strip: Plan the buy, Review investment and Track results.

Plan the buy is the one written grid, twelve rows in fiscal order over a footer named Fiscal year: Month, with this month as its word; Budget, pressed to type, Not set where nobody typed it, a dotted rule and edited on hover where a draft differs from what is saved; Spent, confirmed, shipped or delivered orders at cost by the month they were confirmed, Not yet for a month not begun; On order, confirmed, shipped or in-production orders by the month they are expected to land; Suggested, the replenishment engine's live recommendations by replenishment date; Against budget, the share with a meter in the cell, Not planned where the month has no budget; Open to buy, the month's budget less spent, on order and suggested, negative with the dot and the word short, Not planned where nobody planned the month. That dot is the page's one attention mark. The chart over the grid is the grid drawn: the bar is Against budget, the wash inside it Spent, the dashed tick Budget, with the year's Against budget beside the title.

Review investment reads the year by capital quadrant, Winner, Traffic Driver, Sleeper, Bleeder, in one order everywhere, with Classified by quadrant, the four bands' share of revenue, as its figure: Share of spend, with over or under as its word where it drifts five points or more from the Segment benchmark; Segment, the industry's share, or No industry set, and the whole column leaves when nobody set an industry; Spend; Revenue; Margin; GMROI, each Not measured where it is not. [Capital quadrants](../product/capital-quadrants) explains the four. Track results is read-only: the same year split into a Fiscal year band and one band per quadrant, each quadrant headed by its share of the year's revenue; Revenue, always shown, Planned COGS and Actual COGS chosen from a Measures menu; Not yet for a month not begun; and a chart, Revenue and cost, one line per measure to the last closed month.

## What to do

Type a figure in Budget, in any month including a past one, and the strip counts the months edited with Discard and Save. A first plan needs a figure for every month before Save plan can be pressed, and says so in ink beside it:

> Every month needs a figure before a first plan can be saved.

Where an edited month is left empty the one consequence sentence stands before the button:

> Saving writes $0 for 3 months with no figure.

Saved. renders in place, and a refusal renders there verbatim, such as Field may not be negative. or Budget plan not found for the month named. A seat that cannot write reads Saving a plan needs write access. Nothing here blocks a buy. Set a budget on Smart Replenishment and Open the budget on Home both land here.

## When it is empty or failed

A first plan is the Plan grid with every Budget cell Not set, Against budget and Open to buy Not planned, and Save plan. Before the first sync has been worked, the page is one sentence with a door to Home.

> The budget could not be read.

A section's read failed, with Try again; on Plan the buy it refetches the plan and the year's analytics.

> No purchase-order spend yet.

Review investment, before any order has spent.

> No quadrant is classified yet.

Track results, where the read answered with nothing classified, never the failed state. A save refused without a sentence reads That budget could not be saved., That revenue target could not be saved. or The fiscal year could not be moved.
