## What it is

Computed, declared, measured, read in, or the name of the engine that made it: where a figure came from. A provenance word is the one sub-word a figure may carry under or beside it, or in the column's heading standing for every cell beneath. Pressing it opens the trace: the read the figure resolves to, that read's as-of as words, and the inputs a derivation was computed from. Nothing on a page is typed by hand; every figure resolves to a read or a named derivation, and the word says which.

Two more words ride beside it on an engine's figure: the engine's basis word, which says what the engine stood on to produce it, and its confidence word, which is always a word and never a percentage.

## How Tightly decides it

The words are the places a figure can come from. Computed is a derivation Tightly made on the page from other figures, such as open to commit from the ladder. Declared is a number a person typed and signed, such as the five terms of a plan. An engine's own output carries that engine's name instead: forecast, grades, the buy, price response, attribution, analogs. Measured is what actually happened, counted from your sales or your stock. Read in is taken as it arrived from a connected system: a purchase order, stock on hand, a price.

Each engine adds its basis. The forecast says Own record when a line is forecast from its own sales, Borrowed method when its own sales are read with a method chosen for products like it, From an analog when it has no record of its own and past products that sold like it stand in, and Fallback method when the chosen method could not run this time. A grade says measured, borrowed or brand. A price response says measured, borrowed or prior. An attribute says declared, measured, auto, default or connector. A buy line says from system, from an analog, past the forecast or lower confidence. A weekly verdict names the declaration it read or the header it mirrors.

## The words on the face

| Engine | Basis words | Confidence words |
|---|---|---|
| Forecast | Own record · Borrowed method · From an analog · Fallback method | High · Medium · Low · New; a Low line prints Watch closely, with its reasons on hover, and a New line prints New item, with its weeks of sales on hover |
| Grade | measured · borrowed · brand | the basis word is the confidence word |
| Price response | measured · borrowed · prior | high · medium · low; the tier reads High · Moderate · Low · Inconsistent · Still learning |
| Attribute | declared · measured · auto · default · connector | an analog high · medium · low; a placement almost certainly · very likely · likely · below the floor; a size curve measured with the days it read |
| The buy | from system · from an analog · past the forecast | lower confidence |
| Weekly verdict | the declaration or the header it mirrors | firm · thin · not measured |

Where a clear majority of a column's cells would carry the same word, the header carries it instead, and those cells keep the word out of the ink and hand it back under the pointer; a cell with a different word keeps its own. Where a figure has no provenance because nobody measured it, the cell says so with an absence word, Not measured or Not on file, never a dash.

## What you can do about it

Press the word for the trace when a figure surprises you: it shows the read, its date and its inputs, so you can see whether the number is old, borrowed or declared before you act on it. A line reading From an analog or Fallback method is an estimate standing in for a record; on Tightly Pro, give a new product a better analog on Analogs and the next run reads from it. A line reading declared is yours to change, on Declaration for a commitment or on the product for an attribute. Confidence as a word and The forecast's words carry the fuller reading of each engine's own vocabulary.

## Glossary line
