# Work the buy

## The question this page answers

How deep do I buy each style before the season opens, and with what money?

## What you see

::: shot page
:::

Work the buy is a pre-season commitment's own room for setting the buy, opened from [the room](../commitments/the-room) as **Plan the buy**; once the season is open, the worked buy stays reachable under Scenarios, read only. The head carries the commitment's money line, extended while the buy is worked: **Buying budget**, **Placed**, **Open to commit** and **Reserve**, then **Worked buy** (the working copy's depths at unit cost), **Funded** (the part the envelope pays for) and **Remaining to plan**, which reads Into the buying reserve once the buy spends past the line, or Over the envelope once it passes it. A **Buy mix** button beside the head opens a chart of the buy.

The work runs in six steps, shown as tabs over the table: first what the accounts have booked, then Forecast, **Planned buy**, Ship windows, Open to buy, and last the step to sign off. Planned buy is the style grid: one row per style, with Style, the booked units and the plan, Planned buy, Moved, Value at cost, Unit cost, Forecast, vs forecast, Return, Set by and the buying requirements, each column shown where it has something to say. **Set by** says who decided the depth: Forecast where nobody has, Engine where it was handed to the replenishment engine, the person's name (or You), Nobody yet where there is no depth, or Cut to zero.

**Actions**, over the table, carries the grid's tools: saved views, grouping, adding a column, and importing or exporting the grid as seen. **Details**, on the head, opens a column beside the tab; on a working tab it holds Decisions, the decisions open on this commitment, each with its own act.

## What to do

1. Open a pre-season commitment's [room](../commitments/the-room) and choose **Plan the buy**.
2. For a style you agree with, press **Take it** under its forecast.
3. For any other style, type the depth directly in **Planned buy**.
4. Where a style needs one, open its row and use [**Set a size split**](../commitments/act-set-a-size-split) or [**Set a colour split**](../commitments/act-set-a-colour-split).
5. Use **Actions** to group the grid, add a column, or save the view under a name.
6. Press **Undo** in the summary above the grid to withdraw a depth you did not intend.
7. When every style you intend to buy has a depth, press **Add to Bench**. See [Add to Bench](../commitments/act-send-to-the-bench).

Writing a depth needs Read & write access; a refusal appears on the refused row's own cell with the server's sentence, never as a band over the grid.

The room's other acts sit under **On this commitment**: [Sign off](../commitments/sign-off), [Amend the declaration](../commitments/amend), [Change what it covers](../commitments/re-assign), [Release the chase](../commitments/chase-release), [Retire it](../commitments/retire) and [Close and reckon](../commitments/close), each opening as a drawer over the page. The same menu opens the declaration, [Open to buy](../commitments/open-to-buy) and, before the season, [the agreed book](../commitments/agreed-book).

## When it is empty or failed

> No commitment with that id.

> The commitment did not load, so nothing below would be safe to act on.

Where the table would be, the tab says why it is empty in one line: Styles failed to load., The commitment covers no style., or the server's own reason where the styles cannot be measured. With no depth set, the foot reads:

> Nothing to hand over; no depth is recorded yet.
